How is the infinitive expressed?

There are no infinitives in Arabic. The verb is most often given in the past and present in the 3rd person singular (هو) and then declined accordingly. However, if there is, we can express the infinitive by using the particle أَنْ with the verb in the subjunctive mood.

The linking mode is formed from the present tense. Apart from the infinitive, it is used to introduce subordinate clauses (purpose, time) and to deny the future tense together with the particle لَنْ.

أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَذْهَبَ

هَلْ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تَأْكُلَ السَّمَكَ؟

يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ
